Programme 01
Aerial Reconnaissance Unmanned Drone — Mark 1
An unmanned aerial reconnaissance platform currently in early development. Design intent and operational goals are being defined.
This programme is in early development. No prototype has been built, no flight testing has taken place, and no specifications or certifications have been confirmed.
Programme Overview
The ARUD1 is the Aerospace Division's first internally developed unmanned aerial platform. It exists today as a programme with a defined direction — not yet a built or tested system.
The ARUD1 programme was initiated to develop an unmanned aerial platform built around reconnaissance and surveillance roles. The core objective is a system capable of operating autonomously over extended periods, collecting and relaying sensor data without requiring a continuous human operator.
The design direction prioritises long endurance, modularity across sensor payloads, and compatibility with ground control infrastructure already in use by defence and government operators. These are design priorities — not confirmed performance figures.
Engineering and design work is in its early stages. Decisions around airframe configuration, propulsion, sensor architecture, and datalink are still being worked through. No prototype has been built and no flight testing has taken place.
This page will be updated as the programme moves through its development phases and confirmed information becomes available.
The following programme parameters are either still under definition or not yet determined.
The ARUD1 concept draws on sensor fusion research from across the group. Design work is informed by operational requirements gathered from defence and government stakeholders rather than speculative commercial targets.
No external investment has been sought or accepted for this programme. Development is funded internally.
Interest from potential end-users and partner organisations is welcome and informs requirements definition. Registering interest does not constitute a commitment from either party.
Design Goals
The following are the engineering objectives the ARUD1 programme is currently working toward. These are design goals, not confirmed capabilities.
The programme aims to achieve sustained on-station time measured in hours, reducing the operational overhead of frequent recovery and relaunch during long-duration surveillance tasks.
A key priority is enabling the platform to execute pre-programmed mission profiles autonomously — including navigation, basic contingency handling, and sensor management.
The airframe is intended to support interchangeable sensor payloads — potentially covering optical, thermal, and radar sensing — so a single platform can be configured for different mission types.
Command and control communications are intended to be encrypted and resistant to interception and interference. The specific technology and standards are still under evaluation.
The navigation architecture is intended to maintain functionality where GPS is unavailable or unreliable. The specific approach is part of the current design review.
The platform is intended to work with ground control infrastructure already in use by target customer groups. Compatibility targets and relevant standards are being assessed.
Programme Status
The ARUD1 is in Phase 1 — concept and requirements definition. Timelines for all phases are yet to be confirmed.
Establishing operational requirements, platform configuration, sensor architecture, and system-level design intent. Trade studies and early design decisions are actively in progress.
Detailed engineering design, component selection, and construction of the first physical prototype. This phase has not yet commenced. No timeline confirmed.
Ground-based systems and integration testing followed by an incremental flight test programme. No flight testing has taken place.
Formal qualification against operational requirements and any applicable regulatory certifications. No certifications have been applied for or received.
Production readiness and delivery to initial customers. No production timeline, pricing, or customer commitments exist at this stage.
